My Personal Journey
I often think about how unique each of our life experiences are. Each of us has a journey that belongs to us alone, much like our fingerprints. There may be similarities between our stories and the stories of others, but what we have done, where we have been, who we are, and how we physically and emotionally respond to our lived experiences cannot be replicated by anyone else.
Because of this, I want to share my personal journey with you. One thing I know without question is that God’s grace and kindness have been woven into the fabric of my life from the very beginning. In some small way, perhaps my story includes things you can relate to or learn from. We all have a story to share, and this is a glimpse into mine.
My mom was 19 years old when she and dad got married. Following the wedding, Dad spent a year as a middle school teacher. During that time the Vietnam War was happening. It was certainly a cause of much division in the country. However, Dad believed so much in what we were trying to accomplish that he felt compelled to be a part of the effort. He loved his country. He had always dreamed of flying and so he decided to join the Air Force in the hopes of being a fighter pilot and serving his country in the war.
During his officer training my twin brother Paul and I were born. We were born two months premature which was a pretty big deal back then, and we spent several weeks in the incubator in the base hospital. It was a precarious situation, but by God’s grace, we both survived. Following that, just short of two years later, after completing his F4 Phantom flight training, my youngest brother Daniel was born, and after that Dad was sent to the Vietnam war.
In July 1972 while in Vietnam, my Dad’s plane was shot down and he was killed. In previous conversations with my Mom, he had told her that if he died, she had his blessing to remarry with the condition that the man she chose would legally adopt me and my two brothers and raise them as his own. By God's grace, she did remarry and he agreed to do this. An interesting similarity was that he was also a fighter pilot who had flown in Vietnam. I was young enough at the time that I have no other memory of a dad apart from my “new Dad”. He adopted me and was my Dad in every sense of the word and loved and raised me as his own son. This was an amazing gift from God. This is an experience that I always think of whenever I consider the fact that, as a believer in Jesus Christ, I have also been adopted by my heavenly Father! “In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” – Ephesians 1:4b-6
A few years later, when I was 7 years old, my “new Dad” was given a new Air Force assignment and we moved to a base in southern Georgia. I began taking piano lessons and loved it! We started attending a new church where I began to hear and understand for myself the good news of the gospel. Through the kindness of my parents and others, supported by my newfound love of the hymns we were singing, I learned that I was a sinner in desperate need of rescue. I learned that despite my wretched condition, God loved me and did something that I could not do for myself. He sent his only Son (Jesus) to pave the way for me to be freed from eternal punishment in hell. Jesus came to earth and lived the perfect, sinless life that you and I could never live. He was able to do this because He is eternal and divine in nature, perfect in every way. He is God, the Son of God, who appeared to us in the flesh. Because Jesus never sinned, He was uniquely qualified to be the Lamb of God, sacrificially dying a painful death on the cross to pay the penalty required for our sins. I also learned that three days after his death, He rose back to life from the dead just as He had prophesied, proving that He had conquered death and sin. This was amazing news and as a young boy, I received it with joy in my heart! I repented of my sin and asked Jesus to forgive me and save me. I wanted to live for Him. While I didn’t fully understand the full gravity of all that had happened, I KNEW something had changed in me – I was given new life! The best way to describe it was that it honestly felt to me as if my life had started all over again. This verse describes what happened so well: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17.
None of this would be possible had it not been for the preemptive work of God in making me alive in Christ. It wasn’t because of what I had done, nothing for which I could boast. It was only because of His great grace. As the Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:9: “[God] saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.”
Over the years, I was blessed to be raised by God-fearing parents. Mom homeschooled us as well, which gave us a wonderful academic and spiritual foundation for life. I am incredibly grateful for her dedication to doing this. During my childhood, piano lessons were also a big part of my life and I frequently had the opportunity to play in church and other places. My twin brother Paul and I began to dream of doing concerts and in our teenage years my parents bought a second piano so we started playing 2-piano music together.
After completing high school, Paul and I attended Northern Illinois University on full scholarships and earned our bachelor's and master’s degrees in piano. We were blessed to study with one of the top piano teachers in the country. Upon graduation from NIU, I was blessed to marry the love of my life (Lynn) and am grateful for 34 years of marriage as of this year! Paul and I began to pursue a twin-piano Christian piano concert ministry. A central part of that ministry was to communicate the love of God through His Son Jesus. We knew that music is a heart language. We found it could prepare the heart to be receptive to the good news of Christ. We felt that music had a great ability to draw people to attend our concerts, and once there, the living word of God could be heard.
During this time, an impactful moment in my life was when, literally out of the blue, I was suddenly diagnosed with advanced kidney failure. I was 26 years old and felt fine. However, six months later, my kidney function was gone. Lynn was a great support to me during this time. I was reminded how fragile life is, and despite the uncertainty of the situation, I put my need at the feet of God and turned to Him for His mercy and comfort. I was moved by the statement of Job during his suffering, when he said, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him.” – Job 13:15a. That verse resonated with where I wanted my heart to be before Him.
Purely because of the kindness and grace of God, I found myself the recipient of the incredible blessing of a kidney transplant. But not an ordinary kidney transplant! Because Paul was an identical twin to me, in a selfless act of love he offered to donate one of his kidneys to me. This was a very rare event for identical twins to find themselves in this type of situation. The great news was that since we were a perfect tissue match, typical kidney “rejection” would not be an issue for me. Fast forward to now, 30 years later, my kidney (or I should say, my brother’s kidney) is still going strong. Another gift from the Lord for which I am thankful.

"The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and refreshment of the soul."
- J.S. Bach

Our twin-piano ministry went on for several years and we had some special moments where we felt God’s hand at work. However, as time went on, it became increasingly challenging to support our two families. We ultimately decided to pursue new career paths (Paul as a worship pastor, and myself in the corporate world). This resulted in us being separated geographically. Despite this, we’ve had the pleasure of presenting a couple “reunion” concerts together on 2 pianos. We’ve also continued using our individual musical gifts in solo concerts and recordings and in church worship settings.
In 2003, my adopted father passed away from cancer. While this was very sad, we are also grateful to know that he is in heaven and we will see him again one day. In another act of grace, God saw fit to bring another man into my Mom’s life and she remarried again. He has been such a blessing to us and is a wonderful example of a Christ-follower. I view him as my Dad as well. It’s an incredible blessing to have had 3 God-fearing dads in my life!
Lynn and I have been blessed with three children (now grown) - Melissa, James, and Rachel. Two of them are married and grandchildren are due later this year!
I recently retired from my corporate career and am excited to put my energies towards this website and providing music that is worshipful and glorifying to God. I hope that is evident as you hear or play it for yourself.
As I wrap this up, I want to remind you that YOU also have a story, and I hope it includes the work of God in your life. You are made in His image! He loves you more than you could imagine. Getting personal for a moment... have you experienced God’s love and forgiveness? Do you know with certainty where you will go when you breathe your last? If not, I encourage you not to let this day go by without coming to God, quietly, and being honest with Him. I encourage you to confess your sin, turning to Jesus, and receiving forgiveness and eternal life which can only be found in Him. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3:16. If you aren't already, I encourage you to start reading the Bible each day to grow closer to Him. A great place to start is the book of the Gospel of John in the New Testament. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to message me under the Contact page.
If you’ve read this far, thank you for taking the time to learn about me! I hope it was meaningful to you.
Blessings,
Peter (left), and brothers Daniel and Paul
